Home studio (2020)
Sara Simper
as inspired by the feminist and service-oriented artwork of Mierle Laderman Ukeles, this term i have explored the ways in which objects and spaces are ‘maintained’ via monotonous activities or routines. through the time-consuming and traditionally feminine act of sewing, i’ve sought to explore the increasingly domestic context my work has existed in since the pandemic began. this piece shows the interior of my bedroom, or ‘home studio’, as outlined in black thread. the work appears like a quick drawing but, in reality, took over 20 hours to construct.
